Perfection Ain’t all it’s Cracked Up to be

Contrary to popular opinion and all available evidence, I’ve actually not been writing fewer posts; I’ve just been publishing fewer posts. I’ve been writing them just the same, and then saving them as Drafts, convinced that sometime, I’ll find the time to edit, fix the grammar, change the wording, look up the origins of that quote… But then today I signed onto my housemate’s site, and he – massively busy – has actually written a blog a week for the past few weeks.

So the surf is up, the band’s on the stage, the competition is on! I’m going back to the drawing board, and – perfect or not, good grammar or bad – I’ll be posting here once more. Nice to see you again. Hope your summer’s going as well as mine :)

2 Months in San Francisco, and I’m blogging again

At last, I have a permanent place to live. It’s something I haven’t had for a long time, something I’d missed terribly without really knowing it; after seven weeks in San Francisco, at last I come home to a place I can stay in for as long as I want. I suppose in some sense, it’s not really permanent, but there’s a kind of peace I find in running up against the boundaries of my own wishes, instead of feeling driven by deadlines; the person I’m renting from will be home in two weeks, I have a plane home from Argentina in a month, if I don’t move out of Berkeley soon, I’ll never leave ..My list of Things To Do is as long as my arm, probably always will be – but now I sleep better.

Right Brain File

The author of “Create a Right Brain File” is a lawyer (and personal coach?), who suggests gathering things that ‘interest’ you, things that grab at you – even if you’re not sure why. You do this for a while. Then you look back at all the material and see what stands out, what kinds of patterns you get.

“Year End Review” suggests precisely the same thing, only retroactively.

So this is more or less what I was thinking when I started a blog; I wanted to practice writing, and I wanted to collect articles and ideas I found interesting, worthwhile. I wanted to have a way to see the arc of my thoughts over time. Kind of like a journal, but for my “public” thoughts.

As I move and start a new job, I’ll likely write a lot less – if at all – but I’m going to make an effort to put up articles I find interesting, keep – as Right Brain File guy says – a record of things, so that at the end of the year, I’ll have a better idea of the topics and areas that interest me. Might even find out a few things i didn’t know.

So here’s to you, and to me, and to us, and to the New Year. May it be better than 2007, but not quite as good as 2009. Happy (belated) New Year, everyone :)

I am leaving Wednesday, November 14th, and will return on the 20th.
